Project Proposal

Title: Everyday Sinister

Sentence: My project is going to be a series of 3 to 6 images, of things that are supposed to be safe but have been turned into something unsafe or sinister.

Paragraph: For this project I am going to create 3 to 6 of my own images, made from different found images. I am going to take everyday objects that seem normal or safe, and turn them into something a little bit more sinister. To do this I am going to try and incorporate people’s fears, as well as just other things that people seem to find creepy. This could also be a partial writing project for me so I can try and figure out as to why this kinds of things, people’s fear and sinister objects, have interested me for so long.

Description for project of study: I’m going to look at safe objects as well as fears and things that are creepy, and then try and figure out how to merge the two objects into one more sinister object.

Research: There are really only two things that I need to look at. One is an object that people find safe, and the other is people’s fears or things they find creepy. Then I have to figure out as how to combined the 2 in a way that isn’t overly difficult and that works.

Technical research: The technical aspects that I'm going to have to look at are the objects in mind, and which ones and how they will fit together the best.

Time line:
Oct. 5, Present project idea.
Oct. 6-13, Gather information for project, including but not limited to fears, things that people find creepy or scary, and objects used everyday that seem safe.
Oct. 14, Final project proposal due.
Oct. 16&17, Work on more sketches of ideas for project (more research as well). Write down thoughts.
Oct. 19, Finish up research, finalize ideas in mind.
Oct. 25&26, Find and collect good found images that I might be able to use for project.
Oct. 28, Critique in class.
Nov. 1&2, More thoughts on project.
Nov. 4-7, Work on manipulating found images.
Nov. 11, Keep documenting thoughts.
Nov. 12-17, Still manipulating found images.
Nov. 18, Critique in class.
Nov. 20-24, Work on finishing and cleaning up images for finished project.
Nov. 25, Still documenting your thoughts.....I know. Start putting them together though.
Nov. 30, Go through all images and ideas, final touches.
Dec. 2&3, Type up thoughts and ideas in word.

With so many things to choose from for a project, especially one that we are pretty much creating on our own, it was a little difficult to come up with an idea. So, I just tried to think about things that interest me. One of the first things that popped into mind was the idea of things that are scary or even a little sinister. I’m not quite sure what it is about those things that interest me completely, but maybe this project will be able to help me out with that a little bit along the way.

The idea of fear really interested me for the main reason that I myself don’t really have any fears for the most part. I mean don’t get me wrong, I have a couple phobias or things that bother me, but for the most part those things aren’t really scary. So, It’s always made me wonder what it is about those things that send shivers up people’s spines. I was thinking about writing my thoughts down along the way, that way maybe I can figure out what it is about these things that I find so interesting.

After a bit of thinking I also decided to incorporate everyday objects, things that almost everyone would find safe or normal, and then change the objects themselves to fit this sinister idea. Everyone has their own idea of safety or things that make them feel safe, but what if these things turned out to be the exact opposite? If so this could change people’s thoughts about safety or what they find safe in general.

So, what I’ve decided to do is a series of 3 to 6 images that I am going to make out of found images, most likely on the internet. The difficulty of the images will depend on how many of them I am going to be able to do. I am going to take everyday objects that people find safe, like pens, teddy bears, and hair brushes, and turn them into something more sinister possibly using people’s fears. I’m also going to try and use this project as a way of figuring out as to why phobias and things that are a little sinister interest me. I could do this by writing down what I’m thinking or things that I find interesting while doing this project. Even if I don’t figure out why exactly these things interest me I still may figure out a little bit more than I already know, and anything can help. Should be an interesting project I hope.

Ideas at this point

So far I have a few objects that seem safe that I want to work with. One of those objects being a pen, possibly turning it into a needle or something sharp.
